Late goal keeps men's soccer undefeated

BLUEFIELD – Bluefield College celebrated 25 years of men's soccer, Saturday, and this year's team did not disappoint as in the 89th minute the Rams scored to take a 3-2 win over the Truett McConnell Bears in a matchup of two unbeaten teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

In a physical affair which saw the center official dish out nine yellow cards and several players receive attention from the trainers while down on the pitch, it was TMU who literally drew first blood.

The Bears' Jordan Moreno found the back of the net in the 33rd minute, off an assist from Paul Schulze and the visitors carried a 1-0 lead into the break.

Truett McConnell made it 2-0 in the 50th minute on a goal from Joao Costa.

Bluefield quickly responded with a header from Marcel Heller, the assist going to Salvatore Viola. The Rams tied the game in the 73rd minute when Sandro Stalder scored off an assist from Kevin Stoffle.

It appeared the game would go into overtime, but with 45 seconds remaining, Joao Delgado drilled a long kick from about 45 yards right of goal, into the net for the game-winning score.

With the win Bluefield improved to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the AAC. Truett McConnell dropped to 5-1-1 and 1-1 in the AAC.

The Rams return to the pitch Monday in a non-conference match at East River against Carlow (Pa.). Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
