Montreat nips Rams in overtime

BLUEFIELD – It took overtime for the Rams and Montreat Cavaliers to settle things Wednesday night at the Dome Gymnasium. After the extra period it was Montreat standing victorious with a 110-107 win.

The first half saw Bluefield hold the lead throughout, its largest advantage being eight points on several occasions. Montreat's Alonzo Mobley was on fire as he scored 23 of the Cavaliers' 51 first half points. Cordaris Townes was stellar for the Rams as he had 15 first half points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Tony Hood had 12 first half points for Bluefield on four three-point shots. Jorge Concepcion III tallied 10 points in the first 20 minutes for BC.

Bluefield shot a whopping 68 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on 19-of-28 shots. Montreat made 54 percent of its shots. The Rams carried a 57-51 lead into the intermission.

Montreat charged in the first two minutes of the second half and made it a one-point game at 61-60 and the Cavaliers later tied the game at 63 and took the lead 66-65. It remained tight and BC moved ahead by six 87-81 with just over five minutes to play. A turnaround jumper by Stanthony Nelms a minute later increased the Rams' lead to eight. The game got tight in the final three minutes and with 8.7 ticks on the board Montreat had the ball trailing 98-95. A three from the left corner by David Caldwell at the buzzer knotted the game at 98, sending the game to overtime.

In OT BC scored first on a fast break layup by Concepcion and MC tied it at 100 and then took a two point lead. Montreat took its biggest lead of the game two minutes into overtime at 105-100. Two free throws by Gage Yesbeck brought the Rams to within three at 105-102 and Concepcion's trey with 1:36 on the clock knotted the game at 105 and Montreat took a 107-105 lead. The Rams turned the ball over on two traveling calls and with 18.1 left Terrell Sheffey made one of two free throws to give Montreat a 108-105 lead. Sheffey sealed the game with one of two free throws with 7.4 seconds left. Concepcion went coast-to-coast for a bucket with 2.2 seconds left to make it 109-107.

Concepcion led Bluefield with 36 points. Townes had a double-double with 21 points and 17 rebounds. He also had three blocks and a steal. Nelms finished with 11 points, Hood 12 and Yesbeck and Isiah Gill had 10 apiece.

Mobley led Montreat with 36 points and 10 rebounds.

Bluefield is now 12-15, 9-8 AAC, while Montreat is 19-6, 12-6.  The Rams return to action Saturday afternoon at NAIA No. 2 ranked Union College.
