BC takes AAC win in DH split at Point

WEST POINT, Ga. -- Coming off its first two wins of the year earlier in the week, the Bluefield College softball team split its Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader at Point University on Friday afternoon to claim its first conference victory of the year. Bluefield held a 3-1 edge in the opener before the hosts rallied back for a 5-3 win in game one, while the Lady Rams fended off Point for a 6-3 in in the finale.

The games were a a make-up from early March, scheduled to be played at Bluefield. However, the forecasted weather for Friday caused the location to be changed.

Bluefield's record moves to 3-23 for the season and 1-13 in conference play, while Point's mark drops to 18-22 overall and 5-11 in AAC games.

Game 1
After three scoreless innings, Bluefield took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, getting help with a pair of Point miscues. Kasey Holcomb and pitcher Laura Craven each reached on singles. Holcomb came around to score as Morgan Stephens reached on an error and a second-straight error helped Craven score as Eryn Haley reached base.

Point answered with a pair of hits and a run in the bottom half, and tied the game at two after a batter reached on a dropped third strike and scored from second on a single.

Bluefield reclaimed the lead in the sixth thanks to three-straight singles. Craven, Stephens and Haley each poked a base hit, with Craven coming across on Haley's hit for the 3-2 lead.

However, the Skyhawks scored three runs in the sixth--scoring a run with a single, a bases-loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly--to claim their first lead, 5-3.

Bluefield placed two on in the seventh, but couldn't come up with the timely hit as Point won 5-3.

Craven took the loss in 5.1 innings, while Brienna Sparks closed out the game. Courtney Watts claimed the win for Point.

Game 2
Bluefield scored first once again in the finale, as Ali Bartley singled to lead off the game, stole second and was plated on a Holcomb single.

A lead-off triple for Point in the second helped the Skyhawks pull even at 1-1, while Bluefield responded with a four-hit, three-run frame in the third. Holcomb and Stephens singled to get things started before Kiki Murphy doubled as BC reclaimed the lead. A pair of fielder's choices helped pinch runner Megan Arrington score and a Katelyn Pennington single scored Carter for the 4-1 advantage, as Bluefield chased starter Alyssia Palomino from the ballgame.

Point scored one more in both the fourth and sixth innings to pull within one, 4-3.

Bluefield then tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh. Morgan Sawyers singled to begin the frame, and advanced all the way to third thanks to an error on Carter's sacrifice bunt attempt. Point used two more fielder's choice plays, but a single from Pietsch plated Pennington for the three-run lead.

Sparks shut down the hosts in order with a groundout, fly out to left and another groundout for Bluefield's first conference win of the season.

Haley tallied a pair of RBI in the game, while Holcomb led Bluefield with three hits. Pennington and Bartley also had two hits apiece in the win.
