Rams edged 6-5 by Knights in series finale

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Bluefield knotted the game two-all in the fifth, but a four-run sixth from St. Andrews gave the hosts the runs they needed to claim the 6-5 win on Sunday and take the series sweep over the Rams in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.

Bluefield drops to 12-11 overall and 2-8 in conference play with Sunday's loss. The Knights improve their season mark to 16-13 and 6-3 in AAC games.

St. Andrews capitalized on an early Bluefield error in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-0 lead.

Garrett Schilling homered in the fourth and Sawyer McLamb reached on an error and later scored in the fifth to square the game, 2-2.

The Knights had a four-run sixth, logging four hits and once again taking advantage of a BC miscue.

Tyler Rome belted a two-run home run in the seventh. The Rams later loaded the bases in the inning, but left them all on base. Two errors from the Knights in the eighth allowed McLamb to trim the Rams' deficit to just one, but Bluefield was retired in order in their last opportunity.

Kaleb Houchins took the loss, throwing five innings. Zach Tapia finished off the game for Bluefield, working two perfect innings. Brad Mason earned the win despite giving up 10 hits to the Rams.

Bluefield plays at Bowen Field on Tuesday, hosting Shawnee State University in a pair of seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m.
