Rams take pair from Lima for series sweep

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Finishing up six games in a three-day span, the Bluefield College baseball team claimed a pair of wins over Ohio State University at Lima 10-3 and 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon to finish up the series sweep of the Barons. The Rams went 4-2 in the six-game home stand at Bowen Field, which also featured a 1-2 mark against Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent (RV) Union College.

Trayvond Brooks (2-0) hurled a one-hit, complete game in the first of the two seven-inning contests, while the Rams scored in three-straight frames en route to the win in the finale.

Game 1
A Tyler Timmer groundout in the first scored Chris McCollister, who singled with one out, to earn Bluefield a 1-0 lead.

John Segura singled to open the second inning for what turned out to be the Barons only hit of the game. Brooks faced the minimum of nine batters through three frames before three walks, a passed ball and an error resulted in three runs for the visitors.

The Rams bats came alive in the fifth inning though as they tallied five runs on six hits to reclaim a 6-3 advantage. Timmer doubled to deep left-center field to score a pair and knot the game, before Will Kane sent a shot over the right field wall to put Bluefield up 5-3. A Nic Ratliff single then scored Garrett Schilling, who reached on a single of his own.

Brooks retired the Barons in order in the sixth and the Rams tacked on four more tallies in the bottom half. Three walks loaded the bases and forced a pitching change for OSU-Lima, but the Rams' first batter, Kane, was struck to plate another run. A wild pitch allowed Chris McCollister to score, before Schilling doubled down the left field line to up the advantage to 10-3.

The Barons went down in order in the top of the seventh as Brooks closed out the game. He struck out four and walked four while allowing no earned runs.

Timmer and Kane each finished with three RBI, while Schilling added two and Ratliff one.

Game 2
The Rams tallied a pair of runs in the second inning. Schilling opened the frame with a single, and his courtesy runner Gavan Yates later scored on a Tyler Rome bunt which went for a single. Dan Copeland, who reached on a double, then scored on Ryan Lawson's single.

Lima took advantage of an inning-opening walk in the third to make the score 2-1, but the Rams answered with another run in the bottom half. Kane led off with a double to right field. After advancing on a fly-out, Kane scored on a Copeland single to center.

McCollister and Kane added RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth, and the score of 5-1 stood for the remainder of the game for the Ram sweep.

Alex Haas, Kaleb Houchins and Addison Wood tossed two innings apiece in the win, while Dylan Cole closed out the final frame on the mound.

The Rams return to action this weekend, hitting the road for an AAC series at St. Andrews. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, before finishing the series Sunday, once again with a 1 p.m. start.
