BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Bulldogs reliever Nelson Price walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but the Rams were not able to convert as a groundout closed the game and visiting (RV) Union College clamed the 4-3 win in the series finale at Bowen Field, Monday afternoon. The teams split Sunday's doubleheader with Union taking the opener, 4-2 before Bluefield won game two, 6-3.
Bluefield will make a quick turnaround, hosting Ohio State University Lima at 6 p.m., Monday.
After Union (13-5, 5-1 AAC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, Bluefield (9-8, 2-5 AAC) came back with two in the bottom half. Will Kane and
Tyler Timmer produced back-to-back doubles for the second day in a row, while a single from
Garrett Schilling plated Timmer for the 2-1 lead.
Union squared the game at two after taking advantage of hit-by-pitch with two outs. Justin Elder stole second after being struck, then scored on a two-out single.
The Bulldogs extended their lead with a two-run sixth.
Tyler Rome led off the eighth with his first career home run as a Ram, sending it over the left field fence.
After
Luke Harris held Union, the Rams quickly had their backs against the wall with a strike out and a ground out. Schilling earned a hard-fought walk to keep the Rams alive, before Price walked the next two Rams as well.
Nic Ratliff came in as a pinch hitter, but grounded out to short to close the game.
Cory Niten took the loss, giving up three runs in five innings of work.
Dylan Cole gave up one run in an inning of work, while
Luke Harris allowed just one Union hit over the final three frames.
Erik Tarbell claimed the win, tossing 7.1 innings. Price earned the save for the Bulldogs.
