LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Bluefield College men's volleyball team added another dramatic five-set, come-from-behind win on Saturday, as they defeated Lancaster Bible College 3-2 before being swept by Cairn University in it's tri-match.
Bluefield was led by a match-high 18 kills from
Connor Holland, while
Matt Epperson added 15 more and had a team-best .212 hitting percentage.
Chase Craycraft logged 36 assists to spread the ball around.Â
On defense, Epperson had a team-best 10 digs, while the Rams totaled 10 team blocks.
David Gianesin had three solos, while Epperson added two more. Craycraft and
Daniel Griffin were each in on three block assists apiece.
The Rams faced game point in the opening set, but back-to-back errors put Lancaster Bible College back on top 25-24. An error from LBC squared the set at 25-all, and an Epperson kill tied it again at 26, but two-straight kills from the hosts gave LBC a 1-0 lead.
Bluefield came back with what proved to be its best hitting set of the match in the second set. The Rams produced at a .286 clip with nine kills and just three errors on 21 attempts, taking the set 25-20 to square the match. Back-to-back points from LBC made it close at 20-19, BC, but the Rams closed by taking five of the final six points. Four points came on LBC errors, while Epperson put down the kill to clinch the set.
After Lancaster took the third, 25-18, Bluefield came back to claim the fourth, 25-23. The teams stood tied at 21-all after an Epperson kill, and the teams tied once again at 22. Holland came up with back-to-back kills to make it 24-22, while the teams traded service errors to close the fourth set and force a fifth.
Bluefield held three-point leads at 4-1 and 10-7, but four-straight points in favor of LBC earned the hosts an 11-10 lead. The teams traded points on the ensuing five points, before Epperson put down a kill and earned BC a 14-13 lead. A set error for BC squared the match at 14-all, while a service error and an attack error from LBC earned Bluefield the come-from-behind win.
Bluefield hit .128 for the match, compared to just .061 for Lancaster Bible College.
In the day's second match, Cairn University took a 3-0 sweep over Bluefield. The Rams tried to extend the match after dropping the first two sets, but two straight errors from BC after a 25-all tie earned Cairn the 3-0 win.
Holland paced BC once again with nine kills. Craycraft had 16 assists. The Rams had six team blocks, led by three block assists from Craycraft.
Bluefield's scheduled match against Bryan on Tuesday will be rescheduled, so Bluefield is now slated to return to action on Feb. 17, at Eastern Mennonite.Â
