Box Score BLUEFIELD – History was made Saturday afternoon at Mitchell Stadium. It had been 26,965 days since a Bluefield College football team walked victoriously off that field. Saturday before a homecoming crowd of around 1,500, the Rams defeated The Apprentice School Builders 17-6 for their first win of the 2015 season and the school's first home win since Nov. 29, 1941. Following that game in 1941 varsity football was not played at BC again until 2012 when the program was revived.
The Rams drew first blood when Drake Presley drilled a 22 yard field goal with 8:41 to play in the opening quarter. The lead grew to 10-0 when Marion Harris ran eight yards for a score and Presley booted the point after with just over 13 minutes left in the second quarter. Bluefield made it 17-0 midway through the second when Cason Whitt passed 20 yards to Quantre'l Hardy and Presley converted the PAT.
Bluefield's defense was strong in the opening half, holding the Builders scoreless with six first downs and 79 yards of total offense on 31 plays.
The Rams did not score in the second half, but the defense kept The Apprentice School at bay all afternoon. The Builders managed to score with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Brenden O'Neil to Bryce Scott. The extra point failed.
Defensively Ernest Moore led the charge with seven tackles. Darius Flowers had four, including a sack and two tackles-for-loss. Harry Casseus also had four and Carlton Toussaint brought down three opposing ball carriers.
Harris was Bluefield's leading ball carrier with nine carries for 46 yards. Whitt completed 11-of-22 passes for 102 yards with a touchdown. Hardy was the leading receiver with four catches for 42 yards. Mason Maples haled in three passes for 50 yards.
A key component of the Rams' victory was the punting of Daniel Griffin. Griffin averaged 44.8 yards on four punts, with a long of 53.
O'Neil accounted for 127 of The Apprentice School's 164 yards of offense. The quarterback ran for 40 yards and hit on six-of-16 passes for 87. There were no interceptions in the game.
The Builders drop to 1-6 while the Rams improve to 1-7. Bluefield hosts the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) next Saturday in a Mid-South Conference East Division matchup. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
