CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- In a battle of first-year men's volleyball programs, University of Charleston took a 3-0 win from Bluefield on Thursday night. The Rams struggled in set one, but closed the gap in the next two sets, falling 11-25, 21-25, 22-25.
Bluefield drops to 0-3 on the young season, while Charleston logged its first win in program history to improve to 1-3.
Daniel Williams had a team-best five kills on the evening while posting a .308 hitting percentage, and also logged three of BC's seven blocks.
Isaiah Williams claimed 11 assists.
Connor Holland recorded a team-high eight digs.
Charleston was led by Ryan Santos' nine kills, while Brian Cranston and Rajahl Moxey added eight and seven, respectively in the attack.
Charleston came out of the gates hot, racing to a 10-1 lead thanks to four kills and a pair of service aces.
Bluefield struggled in the opening set and fell by a 25-11 margin, but began to find some momentum late in the set, scoring five of the set's final eight points.
The Rams carried over the late first-set success into the second, making for a back-and-forth battle in set two. The first nine points alternated between the teams before UC took two straight for a 6-4 lead.
Later in the set, UC held a 12-10 advantage, but Bluefield pieced together a 6-1 rally, thanks to five different errors from the hosts, and earned a 16-13 lead.
However, the Golden Eagles charged back late in the set with five-straight points to reclaim a 23-20 advantage and eventualy the 25-21 win.
Bluefield's second set hitting percentage of .294, coming on eight kills and just three errors on 17 attempts, was its best of the night, but Charleston logged 12 kills in the set--it's highest set total for the evening.
In the third, Charleston earned a three-point edge at 11-8, but Bluefield later rallied back with five-straight points--all UC errors--to regain a 15-14 advantage. After two points from UC, Bluefield claimed four-straight points, including two kills from
Daniel Williams, for a 19-16 lead.
However, UC found its offense once again and utilized five BC errors down the stretch for the 25-22 win and three-set sweep.
Bluefield will make its home debut at the Dome Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 30 against Cincinnati Christian, with first serve coming at 7 p.m. The Rams then host a tri-match with Cincinnati Christian and North Greenville University the following day.Â
