CLINTON, Miss. -- A goal in each half pushed the host and No. 1 seeded Mississippi College Choctaws over the Bluefield College Rams, 2-0, in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Championship game, Saturday afternoon.
The Choctaws (12-5-1) will advance to the NCCAA National Championships, held Dec. 1-6 in Kissimmee, Fla., while the Rams (12-8-1) will wait to see if they earn an at-large bid to the tournament.
Mississippi College jumped out to a 1-0 lead early, as Stephen Roberson scored in the 7th minute.
While the Rams held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal at the half, the Choctaws were able to convert their only on-target attempt. Both teams recorded five shots in the opening half.
The hosts picked up their attack over the final 45 minutes, and came through with another score in the 77th minute, as Francisco DeAnda earned Mississippi College a 2-0 lead.
The Choctaws fired 14 second-half shots to hold a 19-8 edge in shots for the game. The Rams were only able to post three shots in the second half, none being on frame. Mississippi held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal on the afternoon.
The Rams attack was thwarted on multiple occasions from offside calls, as BC was whistled for nine in the game.
Benjy Slator led BC with three shots, with two of those coming in the opening four minutes of play.
Oscar Hernandez made four saves, while Humberto Pelaez made five saves in the clean sheet for the Choctaws.
