Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

New records set in BC's 5-0 win against Ohio Christian

1153CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The Bluefield College men's soccer team set new program benchmarks for both wins and shutouts in a single season, Thursday evening, as they claimed a 5-0 win over Ohio Christian University in a non-conference, neutral-site matchup at Schoenbaum Stadium. The game was relocated due to wet field conditions at East River Soccer Complex.

The win moves the Rams to 9-4, besting the program's previous single-season win total of eight which was posted each of the last three seasons. Meanwhile, the clean sheet was the Rams' sixth of the season, setting a new single-season best in that category as well. Ohio Christian dropped to 8-6 with the defeat.

Despite the Rams controlling momentum from the get-go, the Trailblazers held BC scoreless over the opening 30-plus minutes thanks to goalkeeper Robert Varela who made a pair of point-blank saves on Nikolai Solomon attempts and another on Benjy Slator. But, Slator was able to corral his saved shot's rebound and find the back of the net for the goal and a 1-0 BC lead in the 35th minute. The score came as Bluefield transitioned after an OCU corner kick.

Just over two minutes later, Dean Johnson provided BC with a 2-0 lead firing a shot past Varela from the right side.

The Rams' attack continued to overpower the Trailblazers, and it led to another score in the 40th minute, as Johnson was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Slator made the edge 4-0 in the 66th minute, as a ball from Matthew Plucinski came from the right side to find Slator near the far post for the tap-in goal. Varela got a touch on the pass, but couldn't deflect it enough to keep it from Slator.

A similar play transpired in the 76th minute, as Chris Gummer led a breakaway up the right sideline. Gummer sent the ball through the box and found Felipe Milanez for the score and a 5-0 BC lead.

Bluefield had several additional close-range opportunities as the game continued, but attempts would not go and BC took the 5-0 win.

Oscar Hernandez logged his third shutout of the season, making four saves. Varela ended the day with 10 saves for the Trailblazers.

BC held a 22-5 lead in shots, leading 15-4 in shots on goal. BC had seven corner kicks to just one for OCU.

Johnson and Slator's two goals apiece move both of their season totals to a team-leading eight markers.

Bluefield is scheduled to host University of the Cumberlands on Saturday in a 4 p.m. kickoff.
