LEBANON, Tenn. -- While BC faced its smallest first half deficit of the season at the half, 16-3, the hosting Cumberland Bulldogs used the second half to pull away en route to a 40-10 victory, Saturday afternoon at Nokes-Lasater Field.
Cumberland struck on its first possession, driving 49 yards in 10 plays. A 15-yard TD run by Michael Nwokoji capped the drive and earned the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.
A safety by Tyler Burr with 3:40 in the first quarter moved the CU advantage to 9-0.
The lead was extended to 16-0 with 10:57 remaining in the second quarter as Reed Gurchiek converted the QB sneek for the 1-yd touchdown.
Bluefield put its first tallies on the board as the first half closed, with
Caleb Frye sending a 28-yard field goal attempt through the uprights. The score concluded a six play, 37-yard drive for the Rams, taking 2:34 off the clock.
Bluefield added a touchdown in the third quarter thanks to
Richard Johnson, who caught the three-yard toss from
Ashten Dixon.
However, Broc Loveless made touchdown runs of 46, 13 and 23 yards in the second half to put the game out of reach for BC.
Bluefield recorded a season high in total offensive yards with 271.
Marion Harris rushed for 121 yards on 15 attempts, while
Ashten Dixon threw for a season high 132 yards with one touchdown.
Bluefield spread the ball among its receivers, led by
Dylan Kidd's 41 receiving yards.Â
Ernest Moore and
Frank Brooks led the Rams' defense, making 10 tackles apiece. The duo ranks 1-2 in total tackles this season with 33 and 25, respectively. Brooks also nabbed one interception on the day.
The Rams face Bethel next Saturday. Kickoff is 3 p.m. ET.
