BLUEFIELD, W. VA. – Kentucky Christian gained a 21-0 advantage without its offense ever stepping on the field, but only put up 17 points the rest of the way en route to a 38-7 win over the BC Rams' football squad Saturday night at Mitchell Stadium.
The Knights level their record at 2-2 this season while claiming a 1-0 mark in Mid-South Conference East Division games. Bluefield drops to 0-3 and 0-2 in divisional conference play.
An errant snap began the game for the Rams' offense, and KCU's Andrew Vannatta recovered for the score in BC's endzone to give the Knights a quick 7-0 lead following the PAT.
In BC's next offensive series, a sack turned into a second-straight fumble, once again recovered by the Knights. This time, Marvin Newkirk picked up the ball and returned it just 12 yards for the score.
The Rams struggled once again to get going in their third series, as a pair of tackles in the backfield forced a punt on 4th-and-16.
Daniel Griffin gave a good 39-yard punt, but KCU's Darrell Givens weaved his way through the Rams' tacklers all the way to the end zone, giving the visitors a quick 21-0 lead through less than five minutes of regulation play.
After another empty possession, KCU tacked on a field goal when its offensive unit made its first appearance on the field. Drew Slikker slid in a 43-yarder to up the advantage to 24-0.
As the wild first quarter continued, BC responded with a quick score of its own. With sophomore
Cory Mabry coming in at QB, the Rams picked up a 78-yard strike to
Rodrell Smith for a score.
Caleb Frye's PAT was good, making it 24-7.
Continuing its ensuing drive in the second quarter, KCU drove 64 yards in 14 plays to tack on another TD. A 26-yard run and a face mask penalty put the Knights on the one-yard line. BC's defense made two stops at the goal line on KCU rush attempts, before a pass on a third-and-goal play made it in the endzone.
While there were 38 total points in the first 19:23 of game time, only seven points would be added the rest of the way.
BC struggled to find a groove on offense as four different QBs saw time during the evening—
Joshua Erby,
Armani Ford,
Cory Mabry and
Ashten Dixon.
Mabry connected on 4-for-11 attempts and totaled 109 yards, with his big play being the 78-yard toss to Smith. In all, BC threw for 126 yards.
KCU also had some quarterback struggles as they continue to face injury at that position. The Knights threw for just 85 yards on the evening.
Bluefield only added 36 yards in the rushing game, while KCU only went for 112 total, led by Demone Belmarez and Jamuel Jones with 54 yards, apiece.
The KCU defense, which head coach
Ordell Walker spoke highly of earlier this week, attacked the Rams in the backfield, making four sacks on the night.
The teams combined for 15 punts, and only 17 points from the game came from the offenses.
KCU's final touchdown came in the final quarter, as a Dixon pass was intercepted by Jachovi Hardge and returned 65 yards for the score.
The Rams hit the road once again next week and will square off with Cumberland (Tenn.). Game time for the non-divisional conference game is slated for 1:30 p.m. ET.
