BLUEFIELD, Va. -- The Bluefield College football team returns to Mitchell Stadium this Saturday evening, wrapping up its only back-to-back home games of the 2013 season. This week, the Rams will play host to the Union College Bulldogs for a Mid-South Conference East Division game.
Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m., while special events for
"Faith & Family Night" begin at 5:30 p.m. at the far end of Mitchell Stadium. Bluefield College football coaches will speak about the program's mission with team members also sharing. Information will also be given pertaining to Bluefield College's Fellowship of Christian Athletes with additional information from FCA Area Director
Mike White.
This week's game will be available on 100.9 FM, The Eagle, in the Bluefield area and online at
www.theeaglefm.com with Larry Mlynczak and Trey Wilson on the call.
The Rams are coming off a 21-40 defeat to Belhaven University last week, where Bluefield struggled with possession and field position. Bluefield made five turnovers (three interceptions, two fumbles) on the evening, which resulted in 17 points on Belhaven's ensuing drives.
Union comes to the Two Virginias with a 1-5 record, with its sole win coming at UVa.-Wise on Sept. 28. However, the 1-5 mark is deceptive, as Union's last three defeats have come by a combined six points.
Last week, Union and Cumberland--the two teams only common opponent to this point--were in a high scoring affair. Cumberland earned the 45-43 win at home. The two teams combined for 930 yards of offense, with Union accounting for 441 yards, 252 coming through the air.
For the most part, Union splits its offensive attack between the run and pass. They vary it up even further with their quarterbacking, as Hogan Goodson and Chandler Whittlesey each see time at the position. Last week Goodson tossed for 152 yards, while Whittlesey added 100 more.
Ryan Shipley leads the defense with 65 tackles, including a pair of sacks. He has 6.5 tackles-for-loss on the year, for a total of 21 yards. Jake Johnston is second on the team in tackles with 51.
After having success with the run game the previous two weeks, the Rams split its offensive effort by making 39 rush attempts (40 yards) and 35 throws (240 yards).
Michael McGrue led BC with 11 tackles last week against Belhaven, while
Marco Vereen was strong in the backfield being in on 4.5 tackles-for-loss, including a sack.Â
Frank Brooks continues to lead BC's defense, with 40 tackles on the year.
Despite the Rams' struggle with field position against the Blazers last week, punter
Daniel Griffin had one of his best outings of the year, recording six punts for 228 yards with a long of 47.
